A WOMAN HAS been found dead following an assault at a house in Co Laois this afternoon.
Gardaí and emergency services were called to a domestic residence on Church Street in Portlaoise shortly after 12.30pm today.
The woman, aged in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A postmortem examination will be carried out in due course, gardaí said.
A man in his 70s was arrested at the scene and is being detained at a garda station in the region.
Gardaí remain at the scene of the fatal assault.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry, while an incident room has been established at Portlaoise Garda Station.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
“Investigations are ongoing,” a garda spokesperson said.
