Recent surveys have shown that paid for TV subscriptions have dropped significantly in Ireland in recent years. Shutterstock

Do you have a dodgy box, what's your thinking and will the recent court case change anything?

This week, TV company Sky has been given permission to obtain the details of hundreds of Irish dodgy box users.

DODGY BOXES ARE back in the news this week after an Irish court case involving Sky and Revolut.

A ruling by the High Court has permitted Sky to access the details of hundreds of Irish dodgy box users as the TV company attempts to crack down on piracy.

While laws do exist to prevent illegal streaming, dodgy box use has soared in recent years, with a recent survey by the Irish Independent suggesting there may be as many as 400,000 boxes in Ireland providing people with pirated content.

Penalties for using a dodgy box can be quite severe: the Copyright Act 2000 states that people who use illegal streaming services can face a fine of up to €127,000 or up to five years in prison.

So we wanted to hear from our readers:

  • Does your household use a dodgy box? Why/why not?
  • Is this instead of a streaming subscription or alongside one?
  • Will the recent news make you reevaluate your use?
