ONE OF THE Anglo-Irish executives at the centre of the Anglo Tapes controversy has resigned from his current role.
Peter Fitzgerald, the former director of retail banking at Anglo, was serving as the interim CEO of the Irish Association of Alcohol and Addiction Counsellors (IAAAC) until the publication of the tapes this week.
Fitzgerald resigned earlier this week, a spokesperson for the association confirmed to TheJournal.ie today.
Peter tendered his resignation on Tuesday and it was accepted by our board of directors.
When asked if the resignation was directly linked to the negative publicity the tapes had drawn, the spokesperson said that the association “wouldn’t be making any further comment on the matter”.
Fitzgerald was with Anglo for over 15 years, working as the head of corporate treasury for four years, before being named as the head of director of retail and business banking. After the nationalisation of the bank, he was retained by management, serving as the head of corporate affairs until February 2013.
In a statement earlier this week, Fitzgerald denied any wrongdoing.
“I was not a member of the executive management board of Anglo Irish Bank in 2008 and therefore was not involved in the discussions that were conducted by senior executive management of Anglo Irish Bank with the authorities in 2008 in relation to the funding position of Anglo Irish Bank.
For the avoidance of doubt, I am not nor have I ever been aware of a strategy or intention on the part of Anglo Irish Bank to mislead the authorities in relation to the forecasted funding position of Anglo Irish Bank.
