The driver was stopped at a checkpoint – and led gardaí to a cannabis cultivation operation.

GARDAÍ SMELLED CANNABIS from a car at a checkpoint – and ended up discovering €60k worth of drugs.

The incident began at about 10pm last night. While conducting a mandatory alcohol testing checkpoint on St John’s Road West, gardaí from the Dublin Regional Traffic Department detected a smell of cannabis from a vehicle.

They searched the vehicle under the Misuse of Drugs Act and discovered a medium-sized bag of what appeared to be cannabis.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Kilmainham Garda station.

In a follow-up search at a house in Prosperous Co Kildare, gardaí uncovered a cannabis cultivation operation.

It yielded a quantity of cannabis plant and herb with a potential street value of approximately €60,000, as well as approximately €30,000 in cash.
