A Colorado town is suing all its voters after an incredibly messy election

The town of Montezuma has 61 voters, and 12 of them ran for mayor.

THE TINY MOUNTAIN town of Montezuma, Colorado has been plunged into administrative chaos since “fatally flawed” elections held last April.

No fewer than 12 people ran for mayor of the town, which is a lot even in normal circumstances, but even more remarkable given there are only 61 registered voters there.

In the end, Lesley Davis became Montezuma mayor after winning by just three votes, but there have been claims of non-residents voting, as well as ballots which were sewed together, leading some voters to be identified.

Without a clearly elected town board or mayor, Summit County District Court last week took the extraordinary step of suing all registered voters in the town of Montezuma.

Andrew Cole, a spokesperson for the Colorado secretary of state, spoke for many when he told the Denver Post:

I have never heard of anything like this, this is certainly an unusual step to take.

Unusual, certainly.

Voters will now be required to appear in person before a local judge, in order to finally resolve the whole episode.
