TWO MEN WILL appear in court today charged in connection with two separate seizures of cannabis plants in Co Leitrim on Monday.

Gardaí said that the two males, aged 41 and 44, have been charged and will appear before Donegal Town District Court at 10.30am this morning. They were charged in relation to the seizure of cannabis plants in County Leitrim on 4 February.

Gardaí in Leitrim seized cannabis plants worth almost half a million euro in two separate raids on that date.

In the first, Gardaí found cannabis plants worth an estimated €240,000 during a planned search of a house in the Kilclare area of Carrick-0n-Shannon. A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

In a separate search, a premises in Aughamore was searched and cannabis plants with an estimated street value of €250,000 were seized. A 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

  • A proper informed debate is badly needed, with a scientific approach looking at individual substances, rather than grouping everything under the “Illicit Drugs” label, unlike other drugs (alcohol, tobacco & coffee included), cannabis is neither physically addictive nor toxic, therefore the option of legalisation should be seriously considered. The current situation is only fuelling organised crime, whilst making criminals out of innocent people whose only crime is smoking a relatively harmless plant in the privacy of their own homes.

Rather than continuing to spend millions of Euro on our current failed policy of cannabis prohibition, shouldn’t we be looking at how we could make cannabis work to our economic advantage? In the U.S., it’s estimated that Colorado State alone will generate $100 million annually from cannabis tax.

    Legalise it.

    • We could ask the question, how much do we spend in taxes a year policing this!? And if we legalised and regulated how much would we make? Not to mention take the power from the criminals!

Let’s be honest here, it’s not about revenue raising, not about taking the power from criminals and not really about better use of Garda resources. People want to be able to pop down to their local ‘green cross’ / rockery and get themselves an ounce of white widow or purple haze for the weekend. All those other benefits are purely justifications or bonuses to this additional freedom.

Your a grown man John you make your own decisions, no one pushing anything, but the benefits aren’t just money or easy access to weed, it is about curing cancer, depression ms and a lot of other illnesses, it is about not having to use oil that is polluting our environment, NO POLLUTION. Do a small bit of keyboard pressing and all the information is right there. It was made illegal trough manipulation. Big corporations are the only ones who benefitted from making it illegal•

    • Ok Julie were can I get this wonder drug? LoL a joint a day keeps the doctor away . That’s why the Dutch don’t get cancer, when people don’t have weed they get really angry, now a days it’s THC content is 25% and higher, in the 1930s 3% to 5%, it’s heading to be a class A drug,
Sure you could say the same with alcohol, it’s used in lots of different medicine but that too is just as bad as weed

Can you show me the proof people get angry, it not addictive that has been scientifically proven, so why are they angry. Ya the thc was that percent back in the 30s because it was legal, now it is not so you buy it from drug dealers who are spraying it with chemicals for more weight. If you knew anything you would know that alcohol is 100 times worse than weed, do men go home and beat their wives and children after smoking this herb, do they starts fights on the street no etc etc. alcohol is highly addictive weed is not. It’s heading to be a class A drug because there is money to be lost by corporations. Look up hemp, comes from this plant, has cured cancer can run cars, heat houses, etc etc etc. legalise it you can control it, you can put an age limit on it, make sense. If you are against this plant being legal than you should be against alcohol being legal .

    • Don’t like drink, weed being sprayed that’s nothing to do with THC, the seeds are GM to make it stronger, you can run car to on alcohol and water too, I know lots of people that smoke it and when there is no weed they are not happy and get real angry I don’t need to prove that I see it all the time. People get highly addicted to it paying big money for little bags, 50€ for a few grams and they all swear that it’s the last time I’m doing that and as day follows night they do it again, now I agree with you about hemp and it’s still used today it’s the smoking of it thats bad for you and others, all types of smoke is bad for the body you can’t tell me other wise,

Than cigarettes should be illegal, thc levels being higher can be due to how the plant is cultivated, thc level can be regulated and controlled. Like back in the 30s. Then why are we not using it,it has Ní pollution , no effects on the environment, they harp on about global warming, hemp is the answer to that and it is a cure for cancer etc.

    • Good point made about underage use Eoin, unfortunately cannabis prohibition has created an unregulated market place which is controlled by criminal gangs, dealers don’t care what age their customers are and are also able to contaminate their product with adulterants in order to add weight and turn a higher profit. If legalised we could reduce underage usage by implementing strict controls, similar to what we have for alcohol and the cannabis purchased by adults would be a lot safer than what’s currently being sold on the street.

      Reply
    • These contaminants must be wreaking havoc on people’s lungs, another reason for the state to legalize, there is only money to be saved it seems.

    • Yes, it’s pretty scary stuff, I presume most cannabis smokers are already aware of Grit-weed and avoid it at all costs, but for those who aren’t, here’s some useful info – http://www.gritweed.co.uk/index.htm

Even when you buy cannabis that isn’t contaminated, when you buy off the street you simply get what you are given, you don’t have the option of choosing a particular strain and you will have no idea how potent it is (until you smoke it) or what its various cannabinoid levels are; if legalised, consumers would be able to choose what type of cannabis they want to use (Sativa or Indica – both having very different effects) and would know both the potency and cannabinoid levels associated with it, making it a lot safer for those adults who choose to use it.

We need a mature debate about drugs kin general in this country. They’re not going away. However, the issue isnt as straight forward as legalise it, tax it and ergo drug related crime will stop and society will be better for it.

Looked into it this plant is less addictive than, nicotine but even more surprising caffeine, goes without saying less addictive than alcohol and less damaging on society. We are allowed drink. Fights, rapes, domestic violence, killings, public disturbances, self harm etc etc. since I noticed the amount of arrests I just wanted to look into what this drug was about. The true history of it is fascinating. The way corporation and government scared people away from it, hemp is why. They had invested in forests, oil and pharmaceutical, hemp would have been a cleaner cheaper alternative to these products and would have beat them on market. So they started a manipulating campaign, using racism to turn people away from it, changed the name from herb, said only blacks and Hispanics and Mexicans used it. They had ads showing white women’s smoking with black men( racism was alive and well this was in 1930s) shows women jumping out windows, men running people over. It was made illegal not because of its effects when smoked, because it could be used with no pollution and very cheap to produce, heat your house, run your car, and 5,000 different uses, hemp oil is proven to cure people in stage 5 cancer. Government owned by corporations and media it was that way in 1930 it is worse now.

    • Studies have also found that the canbinoids in the cannabis plant directly stimulate parts of your brain that open your mind to different thought processes .Slowing down some of the chemicals that make people emotionally heightened and erratic and replacing them with others that make the brain think deeper and with rational thought about things that normally society does not give time too through distraction.

I read Pot Planet a couple of years ago and enjoyed that. The description as to how ‘soap bar’ is made is off putting to say the least. As GLC put it: ‘yeah I smoke soap bar with lots of bits of plastic/ I leave mine in cos it tastes fantastic’

It is so easy now we have so much information at a click of a button, it so easy to educate ourselves, we are no longer confined to rte one and two and a few radio station. We have a mass of knowledge so easy to discover. This hemp story just seems to have caught my attention a lot. It shows corruption, manipulating people, (you know when the government voted to have this made illegal because they had changed the name a lot of them didn’t realise it was the hemp and this plant that they were making illegal.) using media to change people minds on important issues scaring people into agreement. Ya jack I read that too , people seem to get a bigger picture. I was studying also Rastafarian , it wasn’t that they smoked it to get high it was their religion like praying to us, but they said “it was the healing if the people” “all the people that do good, government and other, not want the herb, because it make people think beyond the 9 to 5 pay pension they rob your pension, it make people REBEL. Something like that. I think a lot more studies have to be done on this plant.

    • No more studies need to be done! There’s a wealth of studies already done! As you said Julie alcohol is far more addictive and anti social! I have friends who smoke it and I find it hard to believe that they would go out and commit a crime when they get “high”!

Very true Aaron, we don’t need to look into it more. Ya I know people and they have never committed a crime. But if you look into how and why they made it illegal in the first place, had never anything to do with it being bad for you more to do with wealthy getting wealthier. Hemp could solve so many problems. I strongly advise people to look into it. I only just started few days and I’m shocked! Why is it illegal, if it is to be illegal than alcohol should be even more illegal than getting caught with this herb.

    • I have done extensive research and two things that I found to be the catalyst is….. 1. Oil Barron’s( hemp oil is more efficient than the oil we use) and 2. Ronald Regan.( once he started his war on drugs). Now the police commissioner of Seattle said ” the only way we’ll win this war is to legalise and regulate!” it’s the only way forward!

Government are controlled by corporations, obamas presidential campaign was the most expensive in the history of the world! He is in the pocket of corporations making massive money from oil etc, it is so beneficial to have it legalised for the people but government and corporations are the only ones that will make a loss and they have the power. Will it ever be legalised?

We need to make a stand! I’m sure someone in the dail would listen and help us get an informed referendum on it…….. Not the lies that we are told

I just last week buried a friend who had cancer to think this may have been able to save her life make me sick. Illegal for benefit of corporations. Could we really get someone in the dail to listen to us? If you could just get the facts out there people would agree to legalise it, but like everything else the media and government would use scare tactics and put their own spin on it.
