A 36-YEAR-OLD MAN has appeared in court charged with assault causing harm to a woman at a church in Tramore.

Niall Cummins, with an address at Clairnwood, Tramore, Co Waterford, is accused of a section three offence contrary the Non-Fatal Offence Against the Person Act.

Garda Robert Flynn of Tramore Garda Station told the court that he attended the accused’s home at 10am on Tuesday where he cautioned the man.

The woman, aged in her 50s, remains in hospital where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.  

The court heard that Cummins had no legal representation at present.

When asked by Judge John Cheatle, the defendant said he was making no application for bail. 

“Not today,” he told the judge. 

Gardaí also objected to bail.

Judge Cheatle granted a request from Inspector Niall Daly that the accused be psychiatrically evaluated while in custody.

Judge John Cheatle remanded the accused in continued custody until Tuesday 28 July when the case will resume by video link.
