Norris successfully fought for the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland through the European courts in the 1980s and has consistently led the way on gay rights issues in Ireland.

Responding to the result, the former presidential candidate said that he “always had confidence in the Irish people” but noted the strong support for Yes:

This is a resounding statement – it’s not just a victory – and its a statement to the entire world.

He said that this was not the end of the journey for equality as he awaits the legislation to give effect to the constitutional amendment:

We’ll look at that very carefully to ensure that anamolies that exist at the moment in pension rights and everything else are all cleared up. This is a wonderful day of equality but this is only a fraction of the globe.

Norris expressed gratititude to the thousands of people who came home to vote yesterday with the #hometovote hashtag trending worldwide at one point yesterday.

“I just think what a pity it is that we don’t have jobs for them all I hope that we will soon have jobs to welcome home all these wonderful people after their experiences abroad,” she said.

He added:

I also think of the many people I knew, and knew of, who sadly took their own lives because they were made so unhappy. I remember them today and I wish this day had been there for them.
