Winner of Dublin's first Ironman over the line as thousands come out to cheer on athletes

Traffic restrictions are in place.

Updated 11:20am.

DUBLIN’S FIRST EVER Ironman race is well underway.

The 2,500 athletes started out in the water at 7:30 this morning (before most of us had our breakfast!).

The competitors are swimming, cycling and running the course that starts in Dun Laoghaire and finishes in the Phoenix Park.

The winner has already been announced in a time of just over four hours:

It’s the first time an Ironman triathlon has been held in Dublin and thousands of people  are expected to line the streets to cheer on the athletes.

Competitors from all over the world are taking part in today’s race.

  • The swim takes place in Scotsman’s Bay, Dun Laoghaire.
  • The bike course is a 100km loop from Dun Laoghaire, through the city centre and Phoenix Park taking in Dunboyne, Kilcock and Maynooth.
  • The cyclists will then return to the Phoenix Park where the run will then take place.

Traffic restrictions are in place across many parts of the city.

All Dublin city bridges over the Liffey were closed from 7am until 10:15am but have now reopened.
