A 12-YEAR-OLD child has given birth in Holland, after coming down with stomach cramps during a school day trip.
Local reports say the schoolgirl, who is from Groningen in the north of the Netherlands, gave birth to a healthy baby daughter, after appearing to become ill on the trip. One of her teachers thought the pains suspicious, and called an ambulance. Paramedics delivered the baby.
The young girl had no idea was pregnant, and showed no outward signs, the Telegraph adds.
Nothing is known about the baby’s father. However, the girl has been taken from her family home and will be placed with a foster family when she is released from hospital, news agency ANP reports.
Social services have said she “may be in an unsafe environment” in the family home.
The girl is thought to have been a pupil at the Christian school in Heerdstee Beijum, though this has not been officially confirmed.
State welfare agencies are now caring for the girl and her baby daughter, and counselling is being offered to the girl’s classmates, whose parents were notified by letter.
“We do have young teenage mothers in the Netherlands but 12 years is very, very young,” Marie-Louise van Kleef, child social services director told the news agency.
The agency has asked the police to start a formal investigation.
