Ireland faces cost of millions to clean up polluted water

If Ireland wants to abide by European clean water directives, it’ll have to spend millions cleaning lakes and rivers.

IRELAND FACES MASSIVE costs if it hopes to meet European directives on water pollution standards, a conference has been told today.

The Environmental Protection Agency says that water sources like rivers and lakers will need drastic cleaning if they are to meet the European standards, which come into effect in 2015.

RTÉ said a recent EPA study of nationwide water sources found 931 sources to be either ‘moderately or badly contaminated’.

Ireland is already facing a hefty European fine its failure to meet its obligations under the Waste Framework Directive, which requires Ireland to introduce a formal system for the inspection and monitoring of septic tanks.
