Diver winched to safety by coast guard after diving group stranded on cliffs in Kenmare Bay
The diver was winched into a rescue helicopter before being returned to the rest of their diving group yesterday afternoon.
A DIVER WAS winched to safety by a Coast Guard rescue helicopter after members of a diving group got into difficulty in Kenmare Bay.
Castletownbere Coast Guard said the group scrambled up nearby cliffs on Sunday afternoon after encountering difficulties, but one diver was unable to make the climb and remained stranded on rocks at the foot of the cliff.
Due to the conditions, Rescue 117, a search and rescue helicopter base operated by the Irish Coast Guard, was tasked to airlift the diver to safety, while local groups Castletownbere RNLI and Derrynane Inshore Rescue also responded to the incident.
The diver was winched into the helicopter before being returned to the rest of the group, with Coast Guard volunteers confirming that all divers had been safely accounted for.
Castletownbere Coast Guard described it as “a good outcome to a potentially very serious situation” and thanked all emergency services involved in the rescue.
