Bray councillor served with eviction notice on family's council house

Council says ‘modifications’ to a home are not allowed – councillor says he carried them out 10 years ago.

SINN FÉIN COUNCILLOR John Brady has claimed he was served with an eviction notice on the Bray council house he lives in with his wife and five children because of work he did on it ten years ago.

Brady said he received a letter from Bray Town Council yesterday to tell him his family has until 23 April to leave their home of 13 years.

“The excuse they have given us is, we done work ten years ago that they said they hadn’t the money to do,” he said on his Facebook page.

Tough when you see drug dealing and antisocial behaviour going on in some houses and estates and the council turning a blind eye to it.

The council confirmed to TheJournal.ie that tenants “cannot modify or alter houses without the permission of the council”.

In a statement it said it was “surprised that Councillor Brady is choosing to air a private matter in the media in this fashion”.

The council went on to deny any connection between the eviction notice and recent comments made by Brady in relation to the death of firefighters in Bray seven years ago.

“It should be noted that the Council is constrained by Data Protection Legislation in adequately responding to these claims without the permission of our tenant,” it added.

Councillor Brady did not respond to calls from TheJournal.ie requesting comment.
