Gilmore says State should not pass judgement on who people love

The Tánaiste has welcomed the decision on same-sex marriage, saying that Ireland’s laws reflect its past, as opposed to its future.

TÁNAISTE EAMON GILMORE has said that it is “not the role of the State to pass judgement on who a person falls in love with, or who they want to spend their life with.”

Gilmore made the statement following today’s vote by the Constitutional Convention which recommended civil marriages for same-sex couples, with 79 per cent of people voting ‘Yes’.

Saying that he welcomed the decision, Gilmore added that he had “always believed that our laws reflect the past, not the future on this issue.”

It’s not the role of the State to pass judgement on who a person falls in love with, or who they want to spend their life with.

“That is why the Labour Party wanted the proposal for same sex marriage to be included among those for consideration by the Constitutional Convention,” he said.

I was always confident that when the case was made the people would see the wisdom of the argument.
