Investigation launched after death of young man who was in garda custody

Gardaí arrested the man in Maynooth and have said he was intoxicated.

AN INVESTIGATION HAS been launched following the death of a young man in county Kildare who was being held in garda custody.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) confirmed the death of the 23-year-old this morning, stating that it has commenced an investigation as the man was in custody prior to his death.

The deceased was arrested by gardaí in Maynooth yesterday afternoon and brought to the Leixlip station.

Gardaí have told GSOC that the arrested man was intoxicated.

When he arrived at the station, an ambulance was called and he was brought to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

GSOC said its investigation is at “an early stage” and the man’s identity will not be released until all family members have been informed.
