  • I see the great unwashed weren’t invited.

    • Of course not. Their presence might inject some relevancy into the proceedings and provoke a rush to the exit. Today’s schedule: Blather, canapés, wine, more blather, ‘sangwiges’, more wine, troughs of the stuff, lashings more collar tightening blather, ten thousand calorie dinner, flooded by wine lake. Post-prandial solutions all round. Tomorrow large aspirin. Still 500,000 unemployed. Great stuff.

"Building on progress from Farmleigh"!!! What progress? More people unemployed, more people unable to meet their mortgage commitments, more money piled into ailing banks, more money cut from essential services, little change to the pay and expenses farce that the people who are running this "forum" reap in week after week… This is a front – a show of "look at us we are trying" but I’ll tell them now, it is f#*kin useless holding a forum like this… Little or nothing comes from it compared to the cost of running it… Start with a forum on reviewing pay, expenses, free food, free parking, bar tabs for the boys put down as a legitimate expense. Hold a forum on Dail Eireann and they’d probably save more money…

One final point- could someone do a survey on TD’s and senators and see how many of their children family members of working age are unemployed???

  • So, what you’re all saying is that – because unemployment is high – the government should make no attempt to facilitate high-level debate on Ireland among very senior executives?

Would those executives really take time out to attend if it wasn’t worthwhile?

  • As someone very disappointed with this government I think this forum has a lot of potential if there is follow up. There is an offer from the business leaders to sit on state boards for no fee until 2016. We really need to take them up on that offer even if it means the party hacks have to stand down in the public interest.

  • what a waste of money ,time and effort, why dont they get off their overpaid arses and do somthing useful ? this is just another p.r. stunt to make it look as if their doing something to solve our problems, well i got news for you people, it wont make a bit of difference if you sat around for the next 4 yrs blatthering on about fiscal this and social that, we need job’s and investment not more political spin. as for asking the diaspora!, try asking them why they got the hell out of this country in the first place? we want jobs not jabber!

Jack this is the second "Global Economic Forum". What came from the first one? F**k all that’s what. I’m nit saying that the government should do nothing but this circus is comical. Our economy is broke and as a result we as citizens are broke. Holding a forum is going to do f**k all to entice multinationals into Ireland. We lost the run of things along time ago and the imbalance is to great now to repair… High cost of living requires high wages until they both come down we’re goin nowhere…

    • The first “Global Economic Forum” was held prior to our re-vote on the Lisbon treaty and gave free reign to the likes of Dennis O’ Brien and others to try sway a yes vote via RTE news.
Nothing beneficial has happened since and I doubt this will have any impact either unless these corporate businessmen are here to sign up for the slavery bonus…sorry, Jobbridge

  • Stop cutting pay which will lead people to have more money to spend in the economy which will in turn create jobs.. Is this really that difficult ???

  • Remind me again, what did the last blatherfest achieve?

    Reply
    • The last forum achieved little or nothing, mainly because the government of Cowan and co were so punch drunk with the implosion of the country and our permanent gov, aka the civil service blocked every initiative. At least this gov are awake to the possibilities and will try to make gains out of the genuine good will that is there.

  • Watching and really enjoying the Live Stream from Dublin Castle. I’ve been connected with China for the past 10 years. It’s not true to say that China doesn’t know about Ireland and Irish Culture but I do think there is a lot of work to do to make the Chinese aware that Irish Higher Education is delivered in the English Language! The Chinese LOVE Ireland. They love Riverdance and they adore Westlife. My son, who is half Irish, has built a website in China which has a strong Irish connections as can be seen from these two links: http://www.zhuhainights.com/group/irishinzhuhai and http://www.zhuhainights.com/events/st-patricks-day-in-zhuhai

@ Joseph. How about we not only stop cutting our pay but we actually give ourselves pay increases. That would increases our spending power and we could buy our way out of this recession. Oh wait, maybe that won’t work…

    • …or, we could pretend that we’re loaded, maybe due to the value of our houses or something like that, then borrow more money from the super-smart banks and spend it to boost the economy. Problem solved!

  • The only people worthy of speaking at these events are Irish that have slogged it out in the trenches, own their own businesses, and have made it on a national and international scale. Most of these people who speak at these events have absolutely nothing to offer to a business person looking to get a lift out of events like these. No practical application whatsoever offered in these BS events. Give me the money the government spent on this crap conference and I’ll teach a dozen people how to create an enterprise from little or nothing and give them a few euros to do it. Ireland needs no further conferences on problems. Ireland needs producers.

  • This is a very low level debate, talking around the houses about what we already know. Lets here some creative solutions, not” it’s good when Ministers visit Paris and I speak fluent French.”
