Rush-hour Luas cleared after "loose stone" causes door to smash

Nobody was injured in the incident on the Green Line.

A RUSH-HOUR Luas was forced to be emptied today after the tram hit what operators believe may have been a loose stone.

The tram had just pulled out from the Beechwood stop on the Green Line at around 8.30am when the top panel of glass on the door smashed.

The tram made its way to the next stop, Ranelagh, before inspectors boarded. They then removed the rest of the glass before sending the tram back to the depot in Sandyford.

An eyewitness said “Luckily no one was hurt and we made it to Ranelagh where the inspectors hurried over and got everyone off and proceeded to smash the rest of the remaining glass out before sending the tram back to the depot.

“Fairly shocking stuff though.”

A Luas spokesperson said that they believed that the incident was caused by a loose stone on the tracks, but that was not yet confirmed.

“We believe that a stone hit the door, but that is still being investigated.

“The glass on the doors is designed to shatter. It’s a safety mechanism in case the doors can’t be opened from the driver’s cab.”
