Just read on rte news that the cyclist is in a serious condition. Hopefully he’ll do ok

I walked past I would say ten minutes after the incident. The SUV must of been doing some speed as I was shocked at where the bike was located under the vehicle. The cyclist was in a bad way. I wish him all the best and hope it looked more serious than it actually was.

That’s not a picture I’d like to see if a member of my family were the cyclist!!

I’m not sure about the comments about the type of car is relevant, I have been run over by an Opel Astra and it hurt alot.
The problem we have is cars and bikes don’t mix so well they move differently and people think differently when operating either vehicle, I use both and am amazed at some of the insane things people think is ok to do when driving either of them, so let’s wait until we actually know what happened before blaming either side.

PS. It could have been a farmer?!?!

Well John its quite unfair to call a suggestion “stupid” because you disagree with it. Somebody once said simple minds use simple words. If you are looking for some justification for my statement well I would be quite happy to offer some enlightenment.

I would love to give you a clear and researched thesis but I don’t have the time right now. However:

1. You can learn to drive and then pass your test in a 1litre ford fiesta. That is a completely different type of vehicle than a Range Rover or other such 4*4s or SUVS.
2. Yes buses are bigger but they are been driven by people trained to operate such large sized vehicles in busy public areas.
4. The chances of serious injury to a pedestrian struck by an SUV are higher, greater mass equates to greater damage.
5. 4*4s are great if you are a farmer that needs to go looking for a sick cow in your fields at 3am, not much call for that in Dublin City Centre.

I can go on, what about environmental impact? There are plenty of reasons why SUVS should be banned from city centres and I don’t consider any of them stupid.

I cant think of any reason why people should be allowed drive SUVS into city centres except for personal choice. I am all for freedom in society but when your own personal preferences can have an effect on the quality of other peoples life is it really worth it?

Always the same from motorists about cyclists not obeying the rules of the road, but how many of them break the speed limit, fail to come to a 100% stop at a stop sign or sneak through on amber lights?
Plenty of them do one or more of these on a regular basis.

And now when there’s a story about a guy in the hospital after literally being run over, it’s all “Cyclists break lights!”

There will be 100% compliance by cyclists around the time when there will be 100% compliance by motorists.

Let’s hope this guy makes it. That photo is scary.

Cyclists should take some heed to the Rules of the road,
Some of them are a danger to other road users,

Siobhan that equates with saying a girl with blonde hair once stole your boyfriend so you will no longer have any respect for anyone with blonde hair. The light may have signalled green and legally you had the right of way but just because a mechanical device tell you to proceed it doesn’t mean that you should neglect to engage your own senses.

The cyclists along the Luas line are stupid if you ask me!! They dont care for other road users! I drive across the Luas lines every day on my way to work, one evening it was pouring rain the light turned green to I proceeded to cross the lines when out of nowhere this girl cycled straight in front of me and I hit her, the worse thing about it was that she had a massive artists portfolio in her hand as she was cycling… She didn’t care that she went through the red light! Needless to say I gave her a piece of my mind once I knew she was ok! So for that reason n plenty of others I have no respect for them!!

Cars and cyclist don’t mix it’s a flawed system that tries to mix both on roads design for horse and cart.
Painting in a cycling lane on edge of road isn’t a solution either it’s a excuse !
It’s very frustrating attempting to drive through this city with so many cyclists abusing every rule of the road then using one of their fallen comrades unfortunate accident as a podium to project stupid views. How much training knowledge of rules of road and respect for the law does a cyclist have ? Is it equal to the road tax they pay !

What could the Luas do that a bendy bus on the same route could not. More passengers? For every 2 Luas’s use 3 bendy buses. If Luas breaks down the one to follow is affected. No overhead cables or tracks needed for bus Just another waste of money

“Fallen comrades” ? Why make choosing to cycle a bike some sort of Bolshevik conspiracy?

If it is frustrating attempting to drive through this city, why attempt to drive through this city? Save yourself the stress and take a bus, or better yet get some exercise and cycle.

Which views did you find stupid and where are you getting a “podium” from? Nobody won any medals or is wasting good champagne.

Its stupid to repeat the same action but expect a different result without taking any steps to alter the normal course of events, ie attempting to drive through the city without getting frustrated.

Have you considered the possibility that the cause of your frustration is not the people who cycle bikes but the people in society who create and enforce social and public policy?
Some cyclists may be experienced drivers, some may be completely ignorant to the rules of the road but there is no legal requirement to learn them; there is no legal requirement to wear a helmet or reflective clothing. Have you ever seen a garda stop a cyclist?

Don’t get angry or frustrated get active ask your local councillor or TD or Garda Superintendent about policy.
