Man killed in suspected Christmas day hit-and-run

A 41-year old man was killed after he was struck by a vehicle in the early hours of Christmas morning.

GARDAÍ ARE APPEALING for witnesses following the death of a man after a suspected hit-and-run accident in Wicklow in the early hours of Christmas morning.

The 41-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was walking along the the N11 at Coyne’s Cross, near Ashford, when he was struck at about 1.30am on Christmas morning.

The Sunday Independent reports that the driver of a black Fiat Diablo van contacted the gardaí a short time later to make the incident known. A 21-year-old man was then arrested and questioned in Gorey garda station, and was subsequently released.

It has been confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

The deceased man is the 209th person to lose their life on Irish roads this year.
