ELECTION VIDEOS ARE pretty common these days so you have to do something special to get noticed.
Fine Gael TD Martin Heydon took this on board and ran with it – far, far away: into the future, to be more specific.
We don’t highlight individual election campaign efforts often, but we had to make an exception in this case.
The Kildare South TD pays homage to the classic 1980s time-travelling film Back to the Future in his latest video.
There is no singing, a lá Michael Healy-Rae’s pre-election effort, but no expense was spared in the special effects department.
The premise is simple: Doc Brown – played by local Fine Gael councillor Darren Scully – appears outside Heydon’s house one day and the pair travel around the constituency looking for votes.
The dialogue is a thing of beauty, with references to the film merging seamlessly with plugs about the Ring Road and pylons.
Heydon told us he came up with the idea for the video while “having a few pints over Christmas” with Scully and a few other friends.
How do you communicate with people who don’t read the Leinster Leader or the Kildare Nationalist or listen to local radio about the work that has been done?
He said he’s trying to reach voters “in a fun way”.
Heydon said the video has received “by and large a positive reaction”, but “a little bit of stick on Facebook”.
Either way, he looks delighted with the final product.
