PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins has declined to comment on whether he will serve a second term.
In an interview tonight on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show, the president said he will make an announcement at “the appropriate time”.
“My decision is my decision,” he told host Ryan Tubridy, adding that a comment now could interfere with the programme he has planned out and invitations he has accepted in 2017.
However, he did say it was “a great privilege to be President of Ireland”.
I’ve been giving everything I can to it and I’m very happy to do so. Myself and Sabina have received enormous support from people. Yes, I like it.
Higgins received a standing ovation from the audience as he took his seat at the start of the show. He said some 80,000 people have come through the Áras during his time as president and he “couldn’t help but be moved” by the stories people share of their difficulties and how they overcome them.
He also said he “couldn’t care less” when people accuse him of crossing a line with comments he makes on social issues.
