The President is expected to make an official visit to Chile, Brazil and Argentina next month.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins will make an official visit to Latin America in October.

A spokeswoman for the president has confirmed that he will visit the region next month.

It follows a Cabinet meeting today which approved the visit in line with the constitution which stipulates that the president shall not leave the State without the consent of government.

It is expected that Higgins will travel to Chile, Brazil and Argentina during his visit to the region.

It is reported that the tour will take place between 7 and 15 October but no dates have yet been confirmed and Áras an Uachtaráin is expected to issue more details about the trip next week.

Higgins and his wife Sabina recently completed a three week language and culture course in the Spanish city of Santander, brushing up on their epsañol ahead of their Latin America trip next month.
