US COUNTRY SINGER Mindy McCready has died of an apparent suicide, US authorities said last night

Police found the 37-year-old – whose songs included “Guys Do It All the Time” – dead on the porch of a house in Heber Springs, Arkansas.

The officer had been dispatched to the scene yesterday afternoon due to a report of gun shots.

“Ms. McCready was pronounced dead at the scene from what appears to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said a statement from the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office.

The singer – identified in the statement as Melinda Gayle McCready - is survived by two sons, one of whom is 10 months old, CNN reported, adding that the baby’s father, record producer David Wilson, died of an apparent suicide last month.

Police said an autopsy would be carried out and that “the matter will be fully investigated.”

  • Suicide is so tragic and sad. It affects all of society regardless of social status or circumstances . If we could only convince those contemplating suicide that for every reason to carry it out that there exists at least ten reasons not to do it. Problem is that we don’t know where it will strike next. We are unaware that maybe the person beside us is considering this final act. More effort is required to make help available to those who feel suicidal and maybe , in general, if we are all a little more understanding of the problems of others we could all help sometimes without even knowing it.

  • So tragic for anyone who cannot deal with life anymore. Life is difficult, & it seems to be the era of survival of the mentally fittest.. I hope she rests in peace now..

  • Most people who commit suicide do so to stop the pain they cannot cope with. All they want is the pain to stop and in their minds suicide is the only way out !
Have a bit of compassion for what she and others like her suffered !
R.I.P. I hope she is at peace now .

    • Mary, we can have compassion, but we need to realise she made an itreversible and devastating decision that has affected many people! We really need to get the message out there that sometimes you may have troubles and that you may feel suicidal but that help is available!

  • I never thought the phrase committing suicide equated with committing a criminal act. It’s very sad that a person can feel that they have no options left in life, and it’s also a tragedy for the people who are left behind, especially if they feel there was somethibg they could have done.

  • This is terribly sad especially when two young children are left parentless.

However I think it is a mistake to shy away from reality. She had a history of depression, yes, but also a long history of both drug and alcohol abuse. Very difficult to unravel those two, but in her case they led to a life that seemed to have become completely out of control, in spite of repeated attempts by other people to help her, to the point where her children had been removed from her care. Glossing over the role alcohol abuse especially but drug abuse generally plays in suicide would be a huge mistake.

Looking at all those who commit suicide as tragic heros/heroines fosters a feeling among those who are vulnerable that there is something noble about taking their own life. There isn’t. It’s a sad, lonely and desperate way to die, but it’s also very often self-indulgent or drunken or both and always cruel to those left behind.

  • Awful awful awful. Heart goes out to the kids. However with her life in chos they will be better off not being exposed to that.

  • It might be a silly comment in your opinion but I’m sure those children might feel the same way later in there life. You might not like selfish as a correct choice of words but there is an element of it in anyones decision to take there life along with countless other words and feelings. Don’t do this topic a disservice by banning uncomfortable terms

      Fair point.

    • Are people who die of cancer selfish too then ? Depression is an illness just like any other.

      Reply
    • There a many people suffering with depression who choose not to kill themselves. Cancer is not a choice. Stupid analogy.

    • Suicide is a desperate act by someone in intense pain, their thought process and judgement are totally skewed by the mental illness. saying someone is selfish because an illness like this has taken hold is just cruel, it perpertuates the stigma on mental held and makes people effected less likely to feel they can be open about it. People are literally dying in this country because of people’s uniformed attitudes to mental health issues.

I take your point; your analogy is flawed though, there is no comparasion between death from cancer and suicide caused by depression.

    • Spot on tom but many who don’t suffer with depression or haven’t lost someone to suicide might not see it like that. The biggest issue with depression is they lack of support compounded by the lack of compassion and understanding from the greater public. The people down voting your comment are the vey same people creating the stigma and shame around admitting one suffers with this illness

      Reply
    • Stephen, my point was that the illness of depression should not be stigmatised and we should have equal companion and understanding as we would to somebody suffering from a different type of illness

I saw her on the VHI Show Celebrity Rehab with Dr.Drew. She is the fifth celebrity to die from 5 seasons on that show. The prescription drugs problem in USA is out of hand. She was having seizures on the show trying to come off the stuff. Sad end

  • Suicide has been decriminalised in ireland since 1993, yet for many they use the term ‘commit suicide’ without thinking. In this circumstance it has negative connotations and implies a crime has taken place when this simply isnt the case.
This page from Emily Cox’ book on the issue of suicide in ireland explains further:
    https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151431068717940&set=a.10150192492182940.328519.755357939&type=1&relevant_count=1&ref=nf&refsrc=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.facebook.com%2Fhome.php&_rdr#!/photo.php?fbid=10151431068717940&set=a.10150192492182940.328519.755357939&type=1&relevant_count=1&ref=nf&refsrc=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.facebook.com%2Fhome.php&soft=side-area&__user=755357939

If we can change the use of terminology as a small step, then the stigma surrounding suicide might not prevail on into the future.

  • Anyone who uses the term selfish in relation to suicide has the privilege of being insulated by their own sense of self-righteousness.
It is a terribly lonely death where the illness slowly erodes all the valid reasons for staying alive until one is left believing it is genuinely the best thing for all concerned.
It’s sad for those loved ones left behind sentenced to agonise over it for the rest of their days.
It’s sad for the victim who felt so alone and was so tortured that they would take their own life.
It’s just very sad all round. Plain and simple!
But it really p*sses me off when people start labelling people they don’t even know as “selfish” in such tragic circumstances they know nothing about!
My heart goes out to those poor kids!
And I’d like to say it was good to see contact details at the end of the piece for those who may need it.

It’s not really ignorant if you think of it from the child’s perspective. “My mam didn’t want to stay alive with me anymore” it’s sounds selfish, however “I can’t handle this anymore, I just want to kill myself” is just as heartbreaking. Use your mind before your words. It’s not ignorance to say what he said its just a different perspective. Everybody has a view point, if it’s different to yours, well, suck it up basically. It’s an awful sad story and I hope the kids grow up and become amazing people, even if it has to be without their mother and father.

    • Totally agree. It is about time we stopped glorifying suicide with Facebook tributes, funeral guards of honour etc etc. Suicide is not an option and this needs to etched in the minds of everyone. It leads a trail of destruction in its wake and unfortunately in Ireland seems to fast be becoming an ‘acceptable’ choice

      Reply
    • Who have you ever heard saying suicide is acceptable? Don’t be so ignorant. You may be entitled to your opinion but its a pathetic one that shows no compassion and is extremely insensitive.

      Reply
    • If you genuinely believe that people who commit suicide make a rationale decision like that then you are clearly quite low in intelligence.

  • Nobody will ever take the final act lightly, let us not be judge and jury lest we also be judged for lack of compassion for those that are suffering and can see no other way out.RIP
