Report: Pope decided to resign after internal report on adultery

La Repubblica says a report presented in December detailed breaches of the ‘sixth and seventh commandments’.

AN ITALIAN NEWSPAPER has claimed that Pope Benedict’s decision to resign was confirmed by the contents of an internal Vatican report which revealed significant adultery and theft problems within the Vatican.

La Repubblica says the Vatican report, chaired by Cardinal Julian Herranz and delivered to the pope in December, is reported to have uncovered details of an ‘underground’ gay network among Vatican and Holy See employees and officials, where members organised events around Rome and inside the Vatican itself.

The report, summarised by The Nation, adds that the members were prone to blackmail because of how their sexual orientation is frowned upon by the Church.

The authors of La Repubblica’s report said the information was “all about the breach of the sixth and seventh commandments” – referring to God’s commands that followers neither steal or commit adultery.

It is speculated that the reference to theft is a reference to the goings-on at the Vatican’s Bank, which was hit with accusations of theft and money-laundering that forced its chairman to quit last year.

The Vatican has insisted that the pontiff’s resignation, which takes effect next Thursday evening, was as a result of his increasing physical frailty which has left him needing motorised transport to travel the length of St Peter’s Basilica.

It has also been reported that Benedict was hurt in a fall while on a visit to Mexico last year. The 85-year-old had gotten up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and not being familiar with the room, stumbled and hit his head against a ceramic basin.

The Daily Telegraph cited Italian media as saying the pontiff was significantly shaken by the incident, the gravity of which only became fully known the next morning when he woke up to find his hair and pillow covered in blood.

  • The other night I saw the documentary, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, which is showing in the IFI at the moment. In a nutshell, this film covered child sexual abuse of deaf children in catholic run boarding schools in Milwaukee, the priest, Lawrence Murphy, abused between 100-200 children. Most of the children had parents who could not do sign language, and therefore they were very easy prey. Why do I mention this? Because cardinal Ratzinger was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) for 25 years, under JPII, whose main role was the investigation of clerical paedophilia. Ratzinger, in his role before becoming pope, received in the region of 4,000 accounts of child sexual abuse, none of these priests were prosecuted. While the documentary focused on the US initially, it also focused on Ireland, and the Signing Priest, Elvis impersonator and paedophile, Fr. Tony Walsh, who abused hundreds of children, our very own Gary Glitter. Ratzinger and John Paul II were both aware of these crimes, but made every effort to cover them up, it sickens me to hear catholics say ‘Benedict’ is courageous for stepping down, I wish I was never born on this island at times.

  • It is interesting and highly significant that the Roman Catholic Church is vastly more worried about homosexual practices between adult males than it is about child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergy.

The Roman Catholic Church has a warped and perverse notion of human sexuality.

New Catechism. Honest, consensual, non exploitative sex between adults is moral.

Sexual abuse of children or vulnerable people is evil and reprehensible.

That’s not too difficult, is it?

    Why are people so shocked?

Read your history books….not the one’s you read in catholic run schools though ;)

Its well known corruption is a massive issue in the church and has been for well over 1,000 years. Its always been about money and land and sex, they’ve always been obsessed about these issues.

The history of the church is full of backstabbing, murders, changing the rules of god to benefit them, greed and fear.

It is not needed (Vatican)even if you wish to be religious or spiritual, honestly ask yourself the following questions.
    1. did you actually choose to be part of this religion?(trans-generational beliefs)

    2. look at the track record of the Vatican if any other institution had such a shameful history would you support them?

    3. Why do the Vatican keep asking for money? they raise billions and don’t pay tax and i have yet to see the Pope donate like Bill Gates or Warren Buffett what would Jesus say to that?( sell off 99% assets do some good with them)

4.How can any decent person support the views of the Catholic Church in relation to the warped views on women and gay people.(surely by there own logic God created all)

5.Jesus story has borrowed some background history from other deities who out date him(the least the Vatican could do is come up with an original) how do you know you’re “God” is the correct one?

6.Why do some pious religious folk think religion is necessary to have a higher moral standard?
(if people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed)Sympathy, empathy, compassion and ethical behavior and common decency can all be developed without dogmatic religious belief systems.

7.What is God/Jesus waiting for to come back ? another two millennium of Human suffering and tragic events? Question the story logic of the Bible and its teachings can you honestly say you actually believe it?

I ask these questions honestly and without trying to offend anyone just interested in the answers people might have, and i am open to an exchange of ideas on the topic.

If the Vatican got up and left Rome many of the city’s gay clubs would be forced to close and hundreds of the city’s prostitutes would be left destitute. That’s not anti-catholicism that’s fact. Plenty of priest/religious leaders in other faiths are gay too but the difference is they don’t enforce celibacy on their employees, they aren’t anti-gay and they’re not misogynists either

Allegations about Gay sex parties involving Vatican priests and staff have been around for years, nothing new. I am not anti-Catholic, just like I am not anti-Jewish, anti-Protestant, anti-Muslim or anti any other of the religions of the world. In fact I am on record as telling an Aunt who is a Nun, and an Uncle who is a Eucharistic minister that I can forgive the individual paedophile priest, for they are unwell and need proper treatment, to ensure they are not a threat to themselves or others. However I cannot forgive the Catholic Churches hierarchy for placing the needs of institution above those of their followers especially the innocent children.

So go and follow your church and its teachings, blindly if you like, for faith is a strong and uplifting item to have. However do not expect me to hold your “Men of God” above their own teachings.

      No.

You’ve only asked one other question.

“What about the journalists who exposed former Irish Bishop using church funds to support his illegitimate son were they also being anti-Catholic?”

That has nothing to do with this. I made no suggestion that every article that is about scandal in the Church is “anti-Catholic” per se, indeed attempts to clean out miscreants from any church might be seen as being pro that church. All I said was that this particular media outlet is known for being anti-Catholic, because it is.

In a way it’s unfortunate that a radical socialist newspaper should be trusted for anything reliable about the pope.
That been said those in the Vatican, like all of us, make mistakes. But they propose, and generally live out, a higher moral standard for the world.
As you well know Gareth, you shouldn’t believe everything you read.

    • They live to a higher moral standard, do they? Using vulnerable women as slave labour, engaging in physical abuse (of children in catholic schools and in reformatories), psychological abuse through their bizarre teachings on sexuality, ect, and, finally, engaging in sexual abuse and its cover up on an industrial scale. Very high moral standards indeed. Oh, they lived up to those standards alright.

ah the devil, good one Mary,

how about that these are corrupt human beings from the top down and always have been,

How women like yourself can even consider supporting the church is beyond me,

Remember Mary that the Church council of Macon in 584 actually seriously debated the question of whether women could be considered fully human.

After much argument for and against, the question was decided in favor of women’s humanity by a vote of 32 for, 31 against! So only by the narrowest of margins…one single vote, they decided that women like yourself could be considered part of humanity.

Count yourself lucky Mary that they even consider you human,

If they had souls, they could be considered human (however inferior). If they had no souls they were just animals. A bit of a problem arose when it was realized that the same female animal could give birth to an ensouled creature, I.e. A son, and a soul-less animal, I.e. A daughter. I reckon this conundrum swung the vote!
