Cyclist (50s) dies after collision with railing in Co Laois

The man was taken to hospital for treatment, but later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

A CYCLIST IN his 50s has died after he collided with a railing in Mountmellick, Co Laois yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 4.30pm on College Avenue in Mountmellick.

He was taken from the scene to the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, where he was receiving treatment but later died from his injuries.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The road remains closed this morning to facilitate a technical examination by gardaí, with local diversions currently in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on (057) 867 4100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station,” a garda spokesperson said.
