14 tech products to watch out for this year

Here’s what to keep an eye out for.

WE’RE HALFWAY THROUGH the year, which means there’s still plenty of time for companies such as Apple, Google, and Samsung to release new products in time for the holiday season.

Although most of these companies haven’t spoken publicly about their new products yet, leaks have given us an idea of what’s to come.

From new iPhones to the next version of Windows, here’s a look at the products we can expect to see before the year’s end.

Apple will probably announce its new iPhone(s) in September

Apple typically unveils its new iPhones in September, and we don’t have reason to believe this year will be any different.

Apple’s next iPhone is rumoured to be called the iPhone 6s or iPhone 7, and it’s expected to come with a better camera and a Force Touch screen just like the Apple Watch.

It will probably come in two sizes just like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

And then a giant new iPad in October

Apple has been rumoured to be working on a new iPad with a 12.9-inch screen, which would make it about the same size as the screen on the 13-inch MacBook. Apple typically unveils its new iPads in October, so there’s a chance we’ll see it then.

We haven’t heard much about whether or not a new 9.7-inch iPad is in the works as well.

The next big update for iPhones and iPads is coming

Apple has already confirmed that iOS 9 will launch this autumn. Apple usually times the launch of its new software with its iPhone unveiling, so it’ll likely roll out when the next iPhone goes on sale.

iOS 9 brings a bunch of new features to the iPhone and iPad, such as a more powerful version of Siri that’s more contextual, the ability to run apps side-by-side on the iPad, and more.

Apple’s new Mac software will debut this autumn

El Capitan, the next major software update for the Mac, is coming this autumn. It’ll bring speedier performance, a more powerful Spotlight Search, and a few other handy improvements designed to make your Mac easier to use.

Apple hasn’t said exactly when it will be released, but the public beta is launching this month.

We may see a new Apple TV

Although most industry watchers expected a new version of the Apple TV to be introduced in June, no such announcement came during Apple’s annual developer’s conference.

But since Apple tends to announce most of its hardware products in the autumn, there’s a chance we’ll see it then. The code for El Capitan even hints at a new Bluetooth remote, which seems like it would be intended for the Apple TV.

Looks like Apple hasn’t forgotten about its iMac line

Apple may also have a 21.5-inch iMac with a sharper screen in its pipeline. Code buried within El Capitan suggests that Apple is building a new 4,096 x 2,304 screen, which hints that a new iMac could be coming, as 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman and journalist Pierre Dandumont discovered.

Motorola may release a new version the Moto X

Last year Motorola introduced its latest version of the Moto X in September, so it’s just about time for an update.

Motorola hasn’t officially said anything about its next phone, but a website called STJS Gadgets Portal claims to have obtained a list of specifications for a new Moto X phone that Motorola is reportedly testing. Based on this leak, it sounds like the phone will come with a bigger and sharper screen, a better camera, and longer battery life.

Google may have a new smartphone of its own

For the past two years, Google has introduced its new Nexus phones in October. By that logic, Google could release another new phone this October to coincide with the launch of the next version of Android.

We haven’t heard much about what to expect from Google’s Nexus 6 successor, but blog Android Police reports that Google may release two new Nexus devices this year.

One will reportedly have a 5.2-inch screen, while the other will have a 5.7-inch display.

The next version of Android will be released this year too

Android M will be released this autumn, although Google hasn’t said exactly when. The update brings a few significant changes to Android, but among the biggest is Google Now On Tap, a more advanced version of Google Now that anticipates what you want before you ask it.

Google typically launches Android M in the autumn along with its new Nexus devices.

It’s almost time for Samsung’s next giant Galaxy phone

Samsung is likely preparing to launch its new Galaxy Note phone, which typically debuts around August or September.

Samsung hasn’t spoken publicly about any of its future phones, but blog Sam Mobile claims to have dug up some information about it. The phone will likely come with a 2K or 4K resolution screen, according to Sam Mobile, with a 16-megapixel camera. It’s meant to compete directly with Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus.

OnePlus is launching a new phone on July 27

The OnePlus One was incredibly popular because it’s cheap compared to most flagship Android phones, but was still a top-notch product that worked well.

Now, the company is gearing up to launch its follow up phone this month. It’s going to have a new design that incorporates metal and a fingerprint scanner that works better than Touch ID.

Samsung may also release a big phone with a curved screen

Samsung is also reportedly working on a giant version of the Galaxy S6 Edge that will probably be called the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, according to Sam Mobile. It will probably be the same size as the Galaxy Note 4, but the screen will slightly curve on both sides just like the S6 Edge.

There’s no telling when and if the phone will launch, but Samsung usually unveils a ton of new products during the annual IFA tech conference, which takes place in Berlin around the end of August/early September.

Windows 10 is coming in July

Microsoft’s much-anticipated Windows update is officially launching on July 29. It’s a big update, especially for those who have been itching for a more traditional Windows experience following Windows 8.

It’s coming with a new Start menu that looks more like the old one, a cleaner browser called Edge that’s meant to be the new Internet Explorer, and more.

HTC’s virtual headset is supposed to launch before the end of 2015

HTC and Valve’s virtual reality headset is supposed to be one of the best of its kind. Called the Vive, it’s expected to debut before the end of the year.

When the two companies first unveiled the Vive at this year’s Mobile World Congress, it received rave reviews.
