A FIFTH TRAGIC drowning has occurred this week, this time in county Clare.
A 17-year-old male got into difficulty while swimming in a canal at Ardcrusha this afternoon and was reported missing.
He was located and taken from water, but sadly did not survive.
His body has been taken to the Midwestern Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle, Limerick.
This marks the fifth drowning this week – yesterday a 19-year-old man drowned while out swimming at night time, while a 10-year-old died off the Cork coast yesterday.
Earlier this week, a teen (17) drowned in Celbridge in county Kildare, while a 21-year-old woman also drowned in an incident at the River Feale in Limerick.
Gardaí have warned people to take care while swimming in bodies of water. About 140 people drown in Ireland each year, according to Irish Water Safety.
