TWO EXPLOSIONS which struck the Syrian capital of Damascus this morning are reported to have killed at least 27 people and wounded around 100 others.

Officials said earlier that police officers and civilians were killed in the and that preliminary investigations suggest that car bombs were involved in the attack, state news agency SANA reports.

Syrian authorities blamed terrorists for the explosions, though no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

One of the explosions hit the aviation intelligence department, while the second struck the criminal security department at around 7.30am local time. Witnesses on the scene say that gunfire broke out after the explosions, dispersing the crowds that had begun gathering in the area.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for three bomb attacks which struck the city earlier this year and in December.

Al Jazeera correspondent Zeina Khodr said that confusion has surrounded the attacks, with the government blaming unidentified terrorists, the opposition blaming the government for orchestrating the attacks, and US officials suggesting that al-Qaida could be involved.

The UN estimates that over 8,000 people have been killed in the conflict which broke out after protests calling for politcal reform began in March 2011.

I wonder why they are not blaming Al-Qaeda like they did last time?

Assad emails: ‘Blaming Al-Qaida is not in our interest’ – translation

    From: Hadeel [XXXXXXXXXXXX]
Subject: Fwd: Who is behind the explosion – it is not Al-Qaida as the Syrians claim
    Date: 24 December 2011 08:26:42 GMT

“It is not in our interest to say that Al-Qaida is behind the operation because such statements clear the US administration and the Syrian opposition of any responsibility; America is fighting Al-Qaida and it will condemn the operation.

Based on what we saw from events on the ground yesterday, we have to acknowledge how well orchestrated it was, and we have to say that the US administration, the opposition and the states which infiltrated weapons are behind the operation so that we can start the attack.

But blaming Al-Qaida alone won’t be in anyone’s interest but Al-Qaida’s, because the organisation has been in existence for decades and this is nothing new. I have even received contacts from Iran and Hezbollah – me being the head of many Iranian and Lebanese media channels – and they directed me not to mention that Al-Qaida was behind the operation cause it would be a blatant media and tactical mistake and futile.

The matter should be amended with extreme speed and I won’t broadcast on my channels any news related to Al-Qaida.

This point is in your interest and to help you; please make use of it, Syria.”
