Unemployment rises in October to 14.4 per cent
The number of people signing on the live register increased by over 2,500.
THE RATE OF standardised unemployment in Ireland rose to 14.4 per cent in October, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The figure is up from 14.3 per cent in September when there had been a one per cent drop.
There was a seasonally-adjusted increase of 2,700 people signing on the live register in the past month.
Overall in the past year the fluctuations on the live register have remained flat, the CSO says, with the numbers fluctuating from between 441,300 to 448,700 people signing on.
Responding to the figures the National Organisation of the Unemployed slammed the government saying its policies “have been ineffective in addressing this unemployment crisis.”
“Ireland badly needs a co-ordinated and well thought through Jobs Strategy: one that identifies potential job growth across a wide range of sectors,” a statement said.
