Varadkar fails to get boost with latest poll showing drop in support for Fine Gael

The results are expected to dampen any desire the Taoiseach may have had about calling an early election.

FINE GAEL HAS dropped in the latest poll with new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar failing to get a boost for his party during the honeymoon period after taking office.

The latest Red C Poll published in the Sunday Business Post shows Fine Gael’s lead over Fianna Fáil has narrowed with Fine Gael going down and Fianna Fáil rising.

It shows Fine Gael down two points on 27%, while Fianna Fáil is up three points on 24%.

Since taking office, Varadkar has dealt with controversies around the lack of female ministers, bin charges and judicial appointments.

The results of the poll are expected to dampen any desire the Taoiseach may have had about calling an early election.

Sinn Fein are also up three to 18% and the Independent Alliance is up by one point to 4%.

Labour remains unchanged at 6% – the same level of support it has been on since last March.

The opinion poll was taken between Monday and Wednesday during the controversy over bin charges.
