Gardaí seize tape of RTÉ interview with Waterford sexual abuse suspect

The tape was handed over by the State broadcaster following a court order.

RTÉ HAS CONFIRMED that it has handed over to gardaí a tape of an interview with a former Waterford sports coach, who is suspected of having abused as many as 30 boys.

The State broadcaster aired portions of an interview with the man last week following a report in the Irish Times which said that two men had come forward with allegations they were abused by the unidentified man in the 1980s when they were teenagers.

Gardaí confirmed they were investigating the case with RTÉ’s Damien Tiernan subsequently interviewing the man at the centre of the allegations.

The man, now in his 60s, did not deny the allegations when they were put to him and acknowledged that he may have abused up to 30 teenage boys.

RTÉ said that it has been “cooperating fully” with gardaí who had obtained an order from Waterford District Court for the original source material of the interviews to be handed over as their investigation continues.
