BUILT IN 1837, 10 The Crescent is a property that’s full of charm, situated in an area that’s seen lots of change.

The four-bed is one of the original six Victorian terraced houses on The Crescent, an enclave of houses which used to be right on the coast, overlooking Galway Bay. Looking at it now though, you’d never know.

In the last almost two centuries, land in this area was reclaimed to form much of what is now Salthill and White Strand, and The Crescent now sits almost a kilometre back from the water.

The house, which is on the market for €1,225,000 through Sherry FitzGerald, has an interesting history. Visitors included former president Éamon De Valera and Tánaiste George Colley. The high-profile connections don’t end there: walking through the house, you’ll spot a couple of ornate fireplaces salvaged from the home of the Irish tenor, Count John McCormack.

And in another twist, the list of previous owners includes the Kenny family, who once owned the Connacht Tribune. It’s rumoured that one of the Kenny daughters, Peggy, once secretly exited via the rear window of Number 10 to elope with the writer Walter Macken.
