30 injured as train strikes platform in New Jersey

Transport authorities launch an investigation into rail accident which caused dozens of injuries.

A TRAIN STRUCK AN abutment on a platform while pulling into a station in Hoboken, New Jersey, today, injuring about 30 people.

The incident occurred at about 9am local time (2pm in Ireland) and at least 70 people were on the train at the time, according to WABC TV.

Emergency services are on the scene and an investigation into the accident is expected to be carried by a specialist team from the Port Authority. Local police told the Star-Ledger that a mechanical failure may have caused the crash.

Port Authority spokesperson John Kelly said that all of the injuries are minor. Services to and from Hoboken have been suspended.
