LAST UPDATE | 5 Dec 2025

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start your day.

Health insurance

1. Questions have been asked over why Ireland’s health insurance companies are raising their prices so frequently, with the most recent price hike happening just last week.

In today’s Morning Lead, Sophie Finn reports that all of Ireland’s main health insurance companies increased their prices at least twice this year, while Irish Life Health has raised its prices four times in twelve months.

The Late Late Toy Show

2. RTÉ has revealed the theme of tonight’s Late Late Toy Show, and it might just make your heart grow three sizes.

The theme chosen for this year’s show is everyone’s favourite mean, grumpy and green creature who, as the song goes, is as cuddly as a cactus and as charming as an eel. Yes, it’s the Grinch.

Taxi Drivers Ireland

3. Taxi Drivers Ireland has announced a six-day “national shutdown protest” to begin next week as it continues to protest against fixed fares brought in by Uber and wider issues concerning the industry.

The national spokesperson for Taxi Drivers Ireland, Derek O’Keeffe, said Government has ignored the “industry crisis” and failed to take any meaningful action to address it.

Bravery Awards

4. The State Bravery Awards are taking place at a ceremony at Leinster House at midday.

The awards are part of an annual ceremony recognising extraordinary acts carried out, often instinctively, during moments of sudden danger. The event will be hosted by Joe Duffy, and the medals presented by Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy.

The Liz Truss Show

5. Liz Truss has announced that she is launching her own podcast, which she says will “take on the deep state”.

The former UK prime minister is making her comeback three years after her shambolic premiership.

Carnivores

6. Young people are “cautious” around the feasibility of reintroducing large carnivores, specifically lynx and wolves, to the UK and Ireland, research has found.

The study, described as the first-ever probe into young people’s attitudes to the reintroduction of such large predators, found only a minority are in favour.

World class

7. Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen has won a gold medal at the European Short Course Swimming Championships last night in Lublin, Poland, while Evan Bailey claimed a bronze.

The Olympic champion registered a time of 14:13.96 in the 1500m Freestyle final. It is the second time in a row that the 24-year-old has won gold at this event.

Lebanon

8. Irish troops have come under fire while on patrol near their base in South Lebanon, none of the peacekeepers were injured in the incident.

Members of the 127th Infantry Battalion were patrolling near the town of Bint Jbeil last night when they were approached by six men on mopeds. One of the men began shooting at the soldiers.

Mansion House

9. The controversial live crib in Dublin City Centre is officially opening today for the Christmas period.

The event organised by the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) brings animals such as donkeys and sheep to the Mansion House on Dawson Stret, where the public can queue to catch a glimpse.
