1. The Israeli cabinet has given approval to plans, tabled by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to invade and annex Gaza city, in the north of the Palestinian region.
2. As revealed by The Journal Investigates this morning, a Fine Gael councillor – who recently served as the Mayor of South Dublin – is one of the owners of a recruitment company that has charged foreign nurses thousands of euro in “agency fees” to come and work in Irish nursing homes.
3. Niall O’Keeffe of the Irish Red Cross writes, 80 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world still faces threats from nuclear weapons. He says we cannot go backwards and must learn the lessons of the past.
4. There is outrage over a plan to partially demolish a Cork housing estate, which cost €2.5m of public money. One councillor has said the project was a complete waste.
5. Workers who have connections to and work in a local area will be prioritised for housing reserved for them in cost-rental developments. It is hoped this will alleviate staff shortages in schools and hospitals.
6. Locals in Dublin city are unimpressed with a new CCTV aimed at preventing people from illegally dumping. Residents are not convinced the camera will change anything.
7. Ireland’s largest residential landlord Ires Reit has sold 16 apartments for €6.6m in the first half of this year, netting €1.6 million over their book value.
8. Unsealed documents from Australia’s mushroom murder, Erin Patterson, have revealed that she also tried to poison her husband with a chicken korma curry.
9. Donald Trump wants to see the Intel CEO gone after the company was accused of national security breaches. Republican Senator raised concerns over the Malaysia-born tech industry veteran reported links to firms in China.
