The 9 at 9 Fianna Fáil election review delays, a super typhoon in the Philippines and cyber safety warnings

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news that you need to know as you start your day.

Cyber crime

1. In our Morning Lead, Niall O’Connor speaks to cyber crime expert Mick Moran, who has urged Irish companies to start scanning work computers for child sexual abuse material, warning that ignoring it could breach the law.

A number of experts also stress the human side of cybersecurity, with new initiatives to help older adults protect themselves from scams.

Fianna Fáil election review

2. Fianna Fáil is bracing itself for a delay in delivering its internal review into its approach to the presidential election.

It was set out last month that the party would carry out a review into its chaotic presidential campaign following the shock departure of candidate Jim Gavin – though in a short statement yesterday, the party admitted that this “may take longer than originally planned”.

Rent crisis

3. In his latest analysis piece, Paul O’Donoghue writes that Ireland’s housing policy is missing a key ingredient: a clear goal for what “success” in fixing the rental crisis actually looks like.

Israeli strike in Lebanon

4. Irish peacekeepers were just a few hundred metres away as an Israeli drone strike blew up a van near Bint Jbeil earlier yesterday.

It is understood the soldiers, serving with the UNIFIL mission, were in United Nations liveried Armoured Utility Vehicles (AUV) when the blast happened in front of them on a roadway in the busy town.

Syrian US visit

5. Syria’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa has arrived in the United States for a landmark official visit, just one day after Washington removed him from a terrorism blacklist.

Sharaa, whose rebel forces ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad late last year, is due to meet Donald Trump at the White House tomorrow.

Jo Jo Dullard

6. Today marks the thirtieth anniversary of the disappearance of Josephine ‘Jo Jo’ Dullard, and gardaí are once again urging anyone who has any information to come forward.

Student Leap Card issues

7. Confusion has erupted after a change to the online Student Leap Card application form left students from the Republic of Ireland studying in Northern Ireland unable to select their universities.

The NTA insists eligibility rules haven’t changed, blaming the issue on “internal confusion” as affected students face higher travel costs.

Man charged over firearms seizure

8. A man appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court yesterday charged in connection with firearms and explosives offences.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled for another court appearance next week.

Super typhoon in Philippines

9. Nearly a million people have been evacuated and floodwaters were rising in the Philippines this morning before Typhoon Fung-wong’s expected late-night landfall on the east coast.
