The appointment comes after Moyagh Murdock announced her resignation from the role in January to take up a new position as chief executive with the insurance industry group, Insurance Ireland.
Murdock had worked as the chief executive for the state agency for the past six years as the RSA campaigned to reduce the number of deaths on Irish roads.
Chairperson of the RSA Liz O’Donnell confirmed the appointment of Sam Waide in a statement this evening.
Waide currently holds the position of Executive Director of Operations and Board Member of the Business Services Organisation within Northern Ireland’s Health and Social Care Service.

He has been in this position since June 2014 and is responsible for over 600 staff and contractors.
Prior to his current position, Waide’s career has spanned private and public sectors in the UK and Ireland where he has held roles with BMW Group, PWC Consulting, Publicis Sapient Global Markets and BAE Systems UK.
Waide holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from University of Ulster and a Master’s in Engineering and Business Management from University of Warwick.
As CEO, Waide will be based at the RSA headquarters in and will transition to his position in September of this year.
“Both the Board and I are delighted to welcome Sam to the RSA and wish him every success in his position as CEO,” O’Donnell said.
“The Board and I wish to acknowledge again the important contribution Moyagh Murdock has made to the work of the RSA during her six years as CEO,” she said.
“Moyagh certainly enhanced the reputation of the RSA both in Ireland and internationally and she leaves the RSA pointed on a strong positive trajectory for furhter improvements in road safety. We wish her all the very best in her new position with Insurance Ireland.”

@Self Employed Anarchist: Absolutely right. I am a qualified driving instructor who holds every class of driving license that there is, and I am also a qualified driving tester. The only other shower of utter self serving wasters that equals the incompetence of the RSA, in my opinion, is the equally dysfunctional, not fit for purpose, Tusla.
Was there no one south of the border qualified to do the job, strange that all the top jobs are now going to northern candidates and then the second in line, third in line jobs go to those known to the prime candidate. funny though, it doesn’t work in reverse.
“Business services organisation with NI health and social care services”
My god… that’s the mother and father of a QUANGO.. what does that actually mean.
No doubt everything will now be in triplicate…..
The article leaves out Mr Waide’s only transport-related experience to date: working for BMW for half a decade. Along some with some questionable material online about Mr Waide’s activities with vehicles that are scientifically proven to be dangerous to children.
@Oisín O’Connor: A similar story to the last incumbent – career with transport manufacturer, then operations for a bus company. It’s almost like you need to permanently have diesel under your fingernails to lead the RSA. Almost certain that if you walk, cycle or take the bus, then you are ruled out.
@Ian James Burgess: you are right – but in quango land they spend millions and millions every year on ads telling people to ‘slow down’ and then they spin the statistics to convince themselves that this is all very effective and then just repeat the same thing over and over year after year -the circa 12mil a year could be put to much better use but of course theres nobody going to rock the boat and suggest they might not be doing the right thing – how dare you suggest such a thing .
@Dave Hammond: they did purchase millions worth of hi vis vests from portwest to distribute to the “causes” of road traffic accidents – making it easier for speeding and drunk drivers to hopefully reduce their speed from 120 to 110 before impact.
Another Quango that should be dismantled , a gang of Bullshitt..s , speed vans at edges of towns catching Auld ones going into do a bit of shopping – , no danger to anyone . Dismantle it ASAP.
Every year both truck &Bus drivers have to sit a day course called the Driver CPC, This is meant to enhance the drivers knowledge etc etc.
These courses which last a day have five different syllabus so a driver has to complete one every year over a five year period.
The issue is that after you complete the five syllabus you restart again with the same text books for another five years, Nothing has really changed in legislation that has being updated in the text books over the years .
So imagine sending the kids to school and they keep using the same text books over their lifetime in school, That’s exactly what the RSA have in place.
Maybe he will have a bit of cop on to actually invest into fixing the road there in atrocious conditions, and that alone will cut down on the road deaths
@Colette Kearns: i think you might have been the one having a few too many that nite – there was no road safety authority 30 years ago and no CEO of road safety – more likely some spoofer trying to Chat you up at a party
