Bringing things back to basics - how a Master's helped this teaching principal enhance their school

Challenge yourself, grow professionally, and change your life with the right course for you.

WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING to continue your studies, expand your knowledge base, or pivot to a whole new career, Atlantic Technological University has courses to support your goals.

ATU has over 350 online, flexible, and postgraduate courses that are currently open for application and starting in September 2026. These courses span Level 6 to Level 9 and cover a wide range of disciplines, including Business, Design, Education, Social Science, Engineering, Computing, Science, and Health.

Courses at ATU have already changed the lives and careers of thousands. One such person is Éilish Mc Donagh, who works as a teaching principal at Kilroe National School, County Mayo.

Since completing her part-time Master’s in Outdoor Education, Sustainability and Wellbeing, Éilish has seen her career move forward, and she’s also had the chance to implement much of what she has learned in the real world.

“I chose the Master’s because I was at a crossroads in my life. I could see that the curriculum was changing, with a redevelopment underway and a growing emphasis on the holistic development of the child and key competencies,” said Éilish.

Éilish has cited her learnings throughout the Master’s as having a real-world impact at the school where she teaches, which has since introduced many improvements, including an outdoor learning space.

“The Master’s had a very positive impact on my teaching and on our school as a whole,” she said. “It helped us grow in awareness around issues like biodiversity and sustainability. As a rural school, we’ve always had a strong connection to nature, but the course deepened and enhanced that connection, bringing us to another level in terms of ecological awareness.”

“One of the biggest outcomes of the Master’s is our outdoor classroom. It provides a dedicated space for teaching in nature, usable in all weather. The children love it—it’s a place they enjoy not just for learning but also during their free time. Children are naturally drawn to wilder, less structured environments, which reminds us of the importance of listening to their voices when designing learning spaces. This project is grounded in the theory and research I engaged with during the course.”

Since completing the course, Éilish is currently seconded to Oide — the Department of Education’s national support service for teachers and school leaders

Speaking about how the flexible delivery of the course at ATU allowed her to balance her studies with her working life as a teaching principal, Éilish said: ”The flexibility of the course also worked very well for me. I could study during school holidays and attend lectures in the evenings, which made it manageable alongside my role as a teacher and principal”.
