Audi A5 Cabriolet

The next-generation Audi A5/S5 convertibles have been revealed

The convertibles will arrive in Ireland as the weather begins to heat up.

AUDI HAS TAKEN the covers (and the roof) off its latest additions to its already extensive model range. The new Audi A5 and sportier S5 Cabriolet models débuted ahead of their public reveal at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show.

Following the same formula as the previous generation, the new A5 Cabriolet retains the more traditional fabric roof, which opens or closes at speeds up to 50km/h. Lowering the roof takes just 15 seconds and it stows away under a rear deck cover. Closing the roof takes just a little longer at 18 seconds. Audi has improved the roof’s design – covering a larger area than the previous model – while the torsional rigidity of the car has been increased by 40 per cent.

The A5 Cabriolet will only be available with diesel engines when it goes on sale in Ireland next March. It will start with a 190hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI with a combined consumption figure of 4.5 litres/100km (62.8mpg).

For those looking for more power, Audi will also offer a 3.0-litre V6 that produces 218hp and consumes 4.9 litres/100km (57.6mpg) and emits 128g/km of CO2. Later on, a more powerful 286hp diesel and a 190hp petrol engine are expected to be added to the lineup.

On the sportier side of things is the S5 Cabriolet, which gains a 354hp 3.0-litre V6 TFSI petrol engine. That power is channelled to the road via Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive transmission, which features an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic.

Official pricing for the A5 and S5 Cabriolet range have yet to be confirmed, but with prices for the A5 Coupé starting at €47,510, it is expected that the soft top versions will start over €50,000.
