Quiz: How much do you know about the cold?

Wrap up well.

ACROSS THE COUNTRY in recent days, thermostats were turned up, AGAs burned well, and storage heating was sworn at.

The past few days were particularly chilly. Temperatures are due start creeping up again next week, and let’s hope an unwelcome weather event doesn’t cause any nasty surprises later in the month.

But for now: Turn the heating up to full blast, put all your warm clothing on at once, fill the hot water bottle, drink that hot whiskey, and let’s settle down to this quiz.

The mountains is brave and close now right enough.

I wouldn't just be walking to Derry.
It's not a great day though, right enough, it's sorta a day for the house right enough.

@lulu: not me. Terminology changes. If we stuck to the original meaning of planet then we would have to call the Sun and the Moon planets. Their categorisation changed and eventually so did Pluto’s. I mean, our Moon is bigger than Pluto and Pluto hasn’t even cleared its own orbit of debris. Even its orbit is wildly eccentric, sometimes bringing it closer than Neptune. Not only that, but the centre of gravity in the Plutonian system lies outside Pluto, meaning it and its 3 moons orbit a common centre of gravity in space – even Pluto’s moons don’t orbit it Pluto.

Missed opportunity for some real winter trivia here…
    1. Ice is less slippy below -6C
    2. Using salt to grit roads doesn’t work below -15C
    3. 10cm of snow corresponds with just 1cm of rain in terms of water volume
    4. Ireland is further north than most of the mid-western states and southern provinces of Canada which regularly get huge volumes of snow and deep freezes in winter.
    The list could go on….
