Danish bomb suspect identified as one-legged Chechen boxer

Police release photo of suspect’s false leg as investigation continues.

DANISH AUTHORITIES HAVE IDENTIFIED the man arrested after an attempted bomb attack in Copenhagen last week as a one-legged Chechen-born boxer.

The man was arrested in a park on Friday after a small explosion was reported at a nearby city centre hotel. He suffered minor injuries to his face and arms, but no one else was injured.

He refused to give his name to police, but authorities say they believe they have identified him. Danish newspaper BT said a boxing coach in Belgium recognised photos of the suspect.

BT reports that the man has been identified as an amateur boxer born in Chechnya in 1986, who lives in Belgium, according to the Huffington Post.

When arrested, the man was carrying false identity cards – one for Belgium and two for Denmark – and had removed the serial number from his prosthetic leg. Police say they believe he attempted to confuse them by requesting Jewish, Muslim and Christian texts to read while in custody.
