Driver clocked at 181km/h in Kilkenny among 3,000 speeding offences over Bank Holiday weekend

Gardaí arrested 187 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the weekend.

OVER THE MAY Bank Holiday weekend, more than 3,000 motorists were detected speeding.

Between 7am on Thursday 1 May until 7am this morning, gardaí undertook an “extensive” roads policing operation.

Among the notable speeding offences detected was a motorcyclist clocked at 122km/h in a 60km/h zone in Donadea, Co. Kildare.

Another motorcyclist was found to be doing 129km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road, Dublin 15.

In Drumfin, Sligo, a driver was clocked doing 151km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Elsewhere, a driver was doing 181km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25 Ballynamone, Co Kilkenny.

Gardaí conducted more than 13,000 breath tests and around 280 oral fluid tests, leading to 187 arrests for driving under the influence.

Over 240 Fixed Charge Notices were issued to people caught using their mobile phone while driving.

More than 340 unaccompanied learner drivers were fined.

A further 115 fines were issued to people not wearing seatbelts.

Some 147 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied and 444 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance.

In Belfast, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) made 11 arrests for drink driving over the Bank Holiday weekend, ten of whom have since been charged to court.

Following a report of an attempted car theft in the University Avenue area shortly before 7.45pm yesterday evening, a 19-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit, kidnapping, taking motor vehicle without authority, and using a motor vehicle without insurance.

Another arrest was of a 69-year-old man who was arrested in the Cumberland Road area of Dundonald shortly after 4.50pm yesterday. He has since been charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath, and is expected to appear before Newtownards Magistrate Court on 3 June.

A 32-year-old man was arrested in the Divis Street area of west Belfast shortly after 9.05pm yesterday evening. He has been charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath and is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on 3 June.

In north Belfast, a 33-year-old man was arrested in the North Queen Street area shortly before 11:50pm yesterday evening. He has been charged with excess alcohol in breath and is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on 7 May.

And a 19-year-old man arrested by officers on patrol in Bruce Street area of south Belfast shortly before 1.30am in the early hours of this morning has been charged to court with excess alcohol in breath.
