Dublin goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton (centre) appeals a decison. Ryan Byrne/INPHO

Dublin's stoppage-time drama forces Mayo into preliminary quarter-final

Cormac Costello produced a sensational equaliser for a 0-17 to 0-17 draw at Dr Hyde Park.

Dublin 0-17

Mayo 0-17

MAYO WILL HAVE TO play a preliminary quarter-final next weekend, after Cormac Costello sensationally added a late equaliser in this final round game of Group 2.

Mayo looked to have the game won in stoppage time with a sensational free-kick won and converted by Ryan O’Donoghue. But from the next kickout, Stephen Cluxton thumped downfield, Ciaran Kilkenny produced a majestic catch, Jack McCaffrey injected pace into the dash and Costello, despite slipping, managed to get to his feet to fist over the eleventh equaliser in this epic.

It was Dublin’s first score in the last twelve minutes, a period that was dominated by Mayo who matched the galaxy of stars that Dessie Farrell was able to roll off the bench for the closing stages.

It leaves Mayo with a home draw against Derry, Cork on Monaghan after Monday morning’s draw.

Dublin can put their feet up, knowing that they have that aura of invincibility still intact.

@CP: You didn’t see Fenton being wrestled to the ground while Dublin were attacking on front of the ref and he gave the free the other way only for them to go down and score?!?!. You didn’t see McCaffrey tackling the ball and it bouncing off the Mayo attacker and going over the end line on front of the umpire which resulted in a 45 and a score as opposed to a kick out?!?!…. You must have watched a different game

@another one? what’s going on is the semi state sec: that’s your biased view imo, all I seen is Dublin failing to get a score / hold on the match in the last 10 minutes or so. One or two dodgy decisions ok but that works both ways, plenty of times the dubs had decisions in their favour over the years and if you said then the ref was a dub you’d be shot down. Great score to level it at the end do

@CP: Nope, not just my view. When the replay was on TV the commentators also insinuated it was a foul on Fenton and the 45 should have been a kick out! That’s two points Mayo shouldn’t have had and a potential point/goal Dublin didn’t get

@Paul Rudd: typical nonsense response..dublin playing away from home (parnell park) for a long time, championship and otherwise. when dublin play the big 4 or 5 counties it’s always close.. so you’re just a plonker. congrats…

I always knew that Dubs were bad loosers, but this tantrum over a very good drawn game is just unnecessary.
Mayo supporters could equally comment on decisions that didn’t go their way, but they are just accepting that overall, it was a great game and both sides deserve great credit and should be pleased with the outcome.
