Producer of ham products says only 'one batch' was affected after listeria recall

O’Brien Fine Foods said the decision to recall the products was taken “out of an abundance of caution”.

THE FOOD PRODUCER whose products were recalled on Tuesday has said it was a precautionary measure after listeria was detected “in a single batch of one product”.

Five ham products were recalled from Brady Family, Tesco Finest, and Lidl’s Deluxe range by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) over the possible presence of a certain type of bacteria.

O’Brien Fine Foods, which makes Brady Family ham as well as Tesco and Lidl own brands, said today that the bacteria, listeria monocytogenes, was detected in a single batch of one product.

“The affected batch was identified at source, quarantined, and did not enter the market,” the manufacturer said in a statement.

It said that while listeria monocytogenes was not detected in any other batches, the products listed in the FSAI notice were produced in the same production area on the same day as the affected batch.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the decision has been taken to recall them as precautionary measure,” the statement said.

Listeria is an infection that often spread through food, and can lead to symptoms similar to flu. In more serious cases, those who ingest contaminated food can succumb to gastroenteritis, meningitis or sepsis.

The statement added that “consumers who have purchased any of the affected products should not consume them and should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund”.

It said that point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the affected products.

The recalled products are:

  • Brady Family Wood Smokes Real Irish Ham 6 Slices – pack size 80g – batch code 235417
  • Brady Family Hand Crumbed Real Irish Ham 6 Slices – pack size 80g – batch code 235880 and 235765
  • Lidl’s Deluxe Triple Oak Smoked Carved Irish Ham 5 slices – pack size 130g – batch code 235461
  • Deluxe Honey Roast Carved Irish Ham 5 Slices – pack size 130g – batch code 235473
  • Tesco Finest Crumbed Shaved Ham 16 slices – pack size 120g – batch code 235412
