I stand corrected, it is technically an offence in the UK belive it or not but not in ireland, changing gear is not included as it is essential for use of the vehicle, however changing radio stations, playing with temp controls etc is.
@Lily: other week cycling sitting in a bus lane , hear sirens behind hop the bike off the road onto the footpath ,get a toot toot , it’s the little courtesies fire engine pushes through
If I broke down on a level crossing and I had passengers that could push me off it, that’s what I’d do. Sometimes it’s alright to use common sense?? Isn’t it?
If your battery is still good you should put the car in 1st gear and use the starter motor to nudge the car forward enough to clear the tracks. If it is an automatic car you’re probably out of luck.
@Ronan McDermott: lol, same here, just this morning for example about 6 cyclists decided it would be a good idea to take over the entire lane of a road, the line of traffic was about 30 cars long. Some drivers were attempting stupid stuff to overtake, but after about 20 mins I could understand why their patience was wearing thin. I’m not sure why cyclists think it’s ok to do this. It’s selfish and dangerous.
Cyclists thinks it’s OK to do this because it is OK to do this, they were not breaking any rules by the sounds of it. A bicycle on the road is a vehicle, same as a car.
It’s not a vehicle – vehicles are governed by Construction & Use as well as EU Type Approval regulations and are required to display number plates amongst a whole other raft of things…..
A bicycle on the road is considered as a vehicle ie it has the same rights as every other vehicle on the road. Cyclists are not second class citizens on the roads as some drivers seem to think they should be.
Just as well the question wasn’t based on the Walkinstown roundabout, if you want to go straight from a 3 lane exit, what lane would you use? Lane 1,2 or 3.
Most people know the correct answers but have you ever watched drivers? The worst drivers on the road are parents on school runs! I am a cyclist, but I am incensed by cyclists who use footpaths or jump red lights.
How about you’re on the motorway and your exit is the next one. Do you;
A. Quickly get into the third or outside lane, overtake as many cars as possible before cutting across all three lanes and making your exit just at the last second or
B. There is no option B, as most Irish drivers would go for option A.
Lily, Define “slowly”. Do you mean slow moving traffic, or driving slower than you are. if you are in left lane driving at 120kmh would you pass those in lanes to your right who are doing 110kmh?
More of a reminder on common sense Ivan. Like the bus question. If a bus is pulling away from a stop , by law you have to hold back. Instead you will get twenty cars trying to pass it out or blaring their horns as you try to merge in to the traffic. Ive had drivers pass me out in that situation and then slam their brakes on. Luckily ive seen it comming. Tho some drivers have overtaken and hit traffic comming towards them. Or end up wedged between bus and oncomming veichle. They end up with their insurance and licenses docked..
@Ivan Enoughofit: try driving a bus up the Navan road and see how much common sense there is floating around, you could make a blooper reel out of 5 minutes of driving through Dublin city centre,
People really need to check the rules of the road. How some drivers escape a crash or death is behond me. Near where I live there is a roundabout. I see near misses there almost everyday . Driver’s approaching the roundabout when they see no car on it speed up and take the roundabout at speed. Then you have idiots on it and haven’t a clue what lane to be in ..or what the indicator is for. Just today this moron was more interested in having a phone conversation at the roundabout than attempting to cross it. .. where are the cops then !!
No, you can pass on the left lane if traffic is moving slowly on the right lane.
*not weaving in and out of traffic, but if you have middle lane hogs going slowly and traffic is moving faster on left lane and your in the left lane, you can pass them out.
Correct lily. Especially when build up of traffic if you are in the left lane and traffic is slower in middle and offside you can pass, not undertake vehicles however
I hate the steady 30 miles an hour no matter if they are on the m50 any road. Even thinking about it makes my blood boil and then i tailgate. Bad i know!!!!!
Jayo You must have missed the quiz a few weeks ago. Q5 When can you overtake in the left lane? Ans, When traffic in the right lane is turning right or when traffic in the right moving slower than the left.
Greig. Undertaking is overtaking on the left or passing on nearside. You don’t have to be changing lanes for it to be called undertaking, If traffic in lane 3 is passing lane 2 they are overtaking. If lane 1 is passing lane 2 then they are undertaking.
Slow down and wait for the bus to pull out in front of you??? Are you joking. Why would I want a big slow bus that is stopping every 2 minutes in front of you.
The question:
If you’re taking the second exit at a roundabout when should you indicate?
The correct answer (which is not given) is to indicate your intentions as soon as you reach the roundabout.
So in this example you indicate right and then indicate left when your turnoff is coming up.
The correct indicator procedure at roundabouts tells other drivers that you are leaving the roundabout or staying on it and speeds up traffic leaving or joining the roundabout.
Depends where the second exit is and if there are subsequent exits.
If it’s a 3oclock with no subsequent exits you should indicate right approaching roundabout. It it’s at 12 o clock and there are subsequent exits you only indicate left after passing the first exit. You never indicate right.
Nope. At a standard roundabout (four roads off it), you indicate left before you get to the roundabout, if you’re going left, indicate right on approach, if you’re going right and don’t indicate on approach if you’re going straight on. Thay way everyone knows what you’re doing before you yet there. And ALWAYS indicate left when you pass the exit just before your exit. DON’T indicate right when you’re in the left lane!!
