Should electric vehicle chargers be exempt from planning rules?

A Fine Gael TD has called on the Government to make EV charging arms exempt from planning permission rules.

IF IRELAND WANTS to meet its electric vehicle (EV) targets, household chargers should be exempt from planning permission, a Fine Gael TD has said.

While Ireland’s Climate Action Plan has set a target of 845,000 private EVs by 2030, just 118,000 were on the road as of February.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast today, James Geoghegan TD explained that 480,000 households in Dublin live in terraced houses or apartments and currently don’t qualify for planning exemptions for EV charging arms.

The Dublin Bay South TD argued that a lack of home charging options is a barrier to EV ownership.

“Exempting chargers from planning is simple, fair, and would make a real difference for households ready to make the switch,” he said.

So, let us know your thoughts: Should electric vehicle chargers be exempt from planning rules?
