Garda watchdog investigating sudden death of a man in Co Westmeath on Saturday

The man died at Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar after he became unwell following an interaction with gardaí.

FIOSRÚ IS INDEPENDENTLY investigating the sudden death of a 34-year-old man in Co Westmeath on Saturday.

The case was referred to the policing ombudsman by gardaí following the man’s death.

A garda spokesperson said they received a report from a concerned member of the public for the welfare of a man who was “acting in a distressed manner in Mullingar, Co Westmeath” on Saturday.

Gardaí attended the scene of the incident where the man subsequently became unwell.

He was taken by ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar, where he was pronounced dead.

The matter was referred to Fiosrú by gardaí under Section 203(1) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.

“As this matter is being investigated by Fiosrú, An Garda Síochána is not in a position to comment further,” the spokesperson added.

One of Fiosrú’s on-call team of investigators attended the scene.

The policing ombudsman is appealing to any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

The office would like to hear from anyone who was on the Main Street in Mullingar at approximately 10am – 11am on Saturday, 28 March.

It is also appealing for dashcam footage from passing vehicles from that location and/or mobile phone footage from anyone who may have witnessed the man and his interaction with gardaí.

Fiosrú is engaging with the man’s family.

A spokesperson said that as the matter is now under investigation, Fiosrú cannot make any further comment.
