FANCY OWNING YOUR own castle? Gone are the days of needing to ascend the ranks of the feudal system to the point of living like a royal.
This castle near Galway city can be yours for the not entirely unreasonable price of €475,000. The property has four bedrooms and is set in mature gardens of 1.1 acres.
Parts of the medieval tower date from the 1500s – with extensions having been added to the rest of the building in the 1700s, and work continuing up to as recently as 2001.
The site is located in the Castlegar area three miles outside of Galway city on the Clargalway / Tuam Road.
From the roof of the tower you can see – and pretend to rule over – Croagh Patrick to the north, the Galway racecourse to the east and the Burren to the west.
Here’s what €475,000 would get you around the rest of the country:
Central Dublin
This three-bedroom apartment is located in Dublin 2 just off of Lower Baggot Street which puts you pretty central to everything.
It’s housed with three other apartments and is priced at €475,000.
Medieval tower notably absent.
Cork
For around the €450,000 mark in Cork, you could pick up your own private island. ‘Spanish Island’ is located off of the west Cork coastline and has come down from €600,000 since 2012.
The island, which is for sale by private treaty (meaning the price is open for negotiation), covers 130 acres and has a number of shingle beaches as well as the ruins of a stone-built farmhouse.
Suggested uses include a sailing centre or a facility for marine activity – although it would also suit the needs of someone with ambitions of starting their own very small independent island nation.
Limerick
In the south-east of the country you can get yourself a 22-acre farm for €450,000. The site also comes with a private well, which means you’d get half off on the water charges.
As well as the main house, which was built in 2007, there are a number of farm buildings including stables and a three column barn.
South Dublin city
If you looking for somewhere in the affluent south Dublin area you can expect to cut back on space. For €450,000 you can get this one-bedroom house on the Maxwell Road in Rathmines.
What this property lacks in 16th century spiral staircases it makes up for in stylish design and location. There is also a large back garden area that leaves room for expansion of the property.
