Gardaí launch major search and arrest operation against alleged organised crime group in Limerick

Eleven raids were launched by gardaí to find evidence and make arrests following a lengthy investigation into activities of organised crime groups in Rathkeale.

GARDAÍ HAVE LAUNCHED a major search operation in a Limerick town targeting money laundering by an organised crime group.

Eleven raids were launched by local and national units to find evidence and make arrests following a lengthy investigation into activities of the gang in Rathkeale.

The operation was specifically focused on money laundering in the region – approximately €400,000 has been seized across multiple bank accounts and in cash.

A woman and two men were arrested during the major operation.

Sources have said that the investigation is targeting alleged members of a family-based organised crime group.

The Journal has learned that along with physical cash and bank accounts, the gardaí also believe the gang were using a large amount of cryptocurrency.

There has also been seizures of high value jewellery and other luxury goods.

Gang members involved have been the focus of investigations into high level international organised crime, theft of rhino horns and it is also feared that they have been involved in people trafficking in the Mediterranean.

Speaking about the operation, Superintendent Michael Fleming, Limerick County Community Engagement stated the following:

“Today’s operation targets the activities of a number of individuals who are involved in serious criminality on a transnational basis.

“The key element that today’s operation is focusing on is the area of money laundering and illicit gains from criminal activity which has taken place internationally and is being brought to bear in this jurisdiction.

“An Garda Síochána are committed to reassuring the community that we are aware of the activity of these individuals and we are committed to taking action,” he said.
