LAST UPDATE | 26 May
ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL experts were called to a garda station in a busy city this weekend after a man walked into the public office with a suspected device.
Sources said that gardaí at Kilkenny Garda Station evacuated the station after the man walked into the facility with a box, which appeared to have smoke emanating from it.
They called the military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to deal with the incident.
The Irish Defence Forces said that an army bomb expert was able to work on the package and make it safe.
“Following an assessment by the EOD team, the suspected device was rendered safe on scene.
“The operation began at 2200hrs on Saturday 23 May and was concluded at 0300hrs on Sunday 24 May,” a statement said.
Gardaí said that an investigation is under way into the discovery of the device.
“On the evening of Saturday 23 May 2026, a member of the public entered the public office of Kilkenny Garda Station with a suspect device found at a nearby location.
“As a precaution, the Garda Station was closed, and a cordon was put in place.
The Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal attended, and the device was made safe.
The device will be sent for technical examination,” a garda spokesman said.
